All About Us

Welcome to Halter Hotties!
Words on a tag dangling from each of our custom garments offer a clue to our philosophy:

“I’m not perfect…
In fact, I belonged to another!
I was once cherished & adoringly paraded around
As the lovely accessory that I was.
Then I was, thoughtlessly, tossed aside for fashion’s next fancy.
At last, loving hands have come to my rescue,
cleaned me up & presented me with a new style, all my own.
I’m a one-of-a-kind Halter top,
I may have been around the block a few times,
but I’m Hotter than ever & all yours,
if you’ll have me.”

As an interior designer for yachts, Halter Hotties owner Kim Alexander synthesized her love of luxury, color, and fantasy with her long-cultivated artistic and creative skills. But that career was cut short by her mother’s illness and subsequent death at the hands of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, colloquially known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

While they processed and healed, Kim and her daughter Paris fingered through the lavender-scented notions and buttons left behind by several generations; mesmerized by the colors and floaty, silky textures of silk scarves, they began collecting these wispy, sometimes forgotten works of art; an impromptu creation for Paris –a halter top worn on a road trip to California—created such a buzz that Kim was inspired to leave boats behind and venture in a new direction. After an early scarf-hunting expedition, Kim and Paris walked to the house, arms loaded with color and silk, prompting husband (and father) Jaymz to comment, “There are my Halter Hotties!” –and an identity was born.

These days Kim synthesizes her love of luxury, color, and fantasy with her artistic skills and adds a nostalgic element: the steady hum of the sewing machine and scent of lavender wafting from her notions box bring the spirit of her mother to her sewing room.

The resulting works of art celebrate ecological awareness, family values, and the inner spirit of fire inside every woman, whether a Halter Hotties top is worn professionally tucked under suiting or boldly bared!

HALTER HOTTIES GIVES PAUSE TO A CAUSE
When Halter Hotties owner Kim Alexander witnessed her mother’s gradual but inevitable decline and eventual death from ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), the course of her life changed from, as she puts it “giving a service to people” (creating the interior spaces on yachts as an interior designer) to “wanting to make something.”
Kim had learned to love the craft of sewing from her mother, a lifelong seamstress who supported her daughter’s creative propensities with art lessons from an early age, in addition to offering support when Kim ventured into art school and as she began her career in yacht interior design.
But then Kim’s mother contracted ALS. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after a notable athlete who suffered from the condition, ALS attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, initially causing muscle weakness, eventually leading to complete loss of normal muscle function.
After finding herself powerless to help her mom, Kim felt compelled to use her mother’s spirit and craft to move forward in a new direction—the creation of whimsical articles of clothing that use nostalgic elements to create glamour and make wearers feel special.
To further cement the bond between Halter Hotties and her mother’s memory, Kim has decided to donate a portion of online proceeds to the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALSTDI), which seeks to find a cure for ALS.
