Born in the Bronx, New York, Lauren grew up in a working-class neighborhood. Although he did not receive formal design training, he was royally steeped in fashion retailing, having worked for New York department stores in his youth. Lauren's initial entry into fashion was designing napkin-wide Beau Brummel neckwear in 1967. With his tie designs and a $50,000 loan, Lauren founded the company Polo Fashions in 1968.
